Rijeka and the Ferry

[June 10 - 11]

Our exit from Croatia was through another EasyJet flight. The closest EasyJet airport, however, is in Ljubljana, Slovenia. As a better alternative to taking an overnight train, we decided to take an overnight ferry from Split to Rijeka and then the train up to Ljubljana. We enjoyed our last Croatian sunset somewhere along the coast.

Ferry ride to Rijeka

Our ferry had old-school charm. A tiny room with a set of bunk beds and a little sink for washing up. Upstairs, there were a few bars and a restaurant. We tried playing cards for a while, but it can get boring with only two people. The next morning, we woke up with a friendly knock on the door. Shuffling into the breakfast buffet area, we had our fill of eggs and bread before packing up and arriving at the port.

Baton girls in Rijeka

Because it was only 7 am, we wandered over to the train station and waited until the international counter opened at nine. In the meantime, I caught up in my journal. I have been very good at keeping a journal for Europe. Dean has slacked, but has converted his journal into a sketch book of sorts. [Dean: I resent the implication that my journal is something that I have a duty to maintain from day to day. My inspiration (or lack of) has no relevance to this site as, love you though I may, it's unlikely you'll see my journal anyway. Cheers to Marita for keeping up on hers.]

The only thing we really saw in Rijeka was the old town. Here, we happened upon a baton-twirling troupe of girls. They ranged in ages and sported cute outfits. I'm not sure if there was an occasion, but we watched the older girls do a little dance while throwing their batons around. It looked pretty good with the backdrop of the city center.

After a bit of internet, we convered our remaining Croatian kuna into Slovenian tolars. I was supposed to save 20 kuna for picking up our luggage at the train station storage, but sadly I miscounted and only saved 15. Dean had to give up his 5 kuna souvenir coin, which is a lovely coin decorated with a bear. He was a bit annoyed with me. So if anyone goes to Croatia, please save us a 5 kuna coin and send it our way!
