Merry Christmas

We still have a lot of catching up to do on this blog. Let me say again that uploading the pictures takes forever when your upload speed is over dial up and when you have the added bonus of frequent power outages. But for now, here are some photos of our Christmas in Varkala, along the southwest coast of Kerala, India.

Dean poses in front of our basic bamboo hut. He is holding the Christmas tree that I made out of tinsel over crumpled paper. We also decorated the outside with paper stars and more tinsel. We will most likely enjoy a nice dinner for Christmas, exchange some small gifts, phone home, and perhaps find a party (although they want an outrageous $25 admission to some...)

Our Bamboo Hut

Here is the red cliffed beach where we can play frisbee to our hearts delight and get pummeled in the strong waves (lifeguard is present though). We also can take a walk about 20 minutes north and claim any beach all to ourselves, aside from a few fishermen. The waves there are mild but still good for body surfing and we once saw dolphins jumping about 100 meters from shore.

Marita on Varkala's Beach

If you want to see where we are, go to the map. From here, we move south to Trivandrum, then northeast to Madurai, then further northeast to Pondicherry and end in Mamallapuram (not on map), which is very close to Madras (where we fly on to Thailand).

I''m glad you're having so much fun. Your Christmas tree is really cool, by the way.

Hi Dean,

This is Jennifer Ovink. Your mom asked for Marta's email address and I wasn't sure about it till now. She just called on Christmas day. Turns out she has been in South Korea for two months visiting her boyfriend Fred. She is back in Castello now and is taking classes and teaching. She quit her job in July to take time to "have fun and be young"--something you might have sympathy with. I sent her your blog address and sent your mother her email address. Hope you have a great Christmas. You two are having a fantastic time I see and I admire your "courage" to take such a trip. Happy New Year from all the Ovink family to you.

Hello!!
I have spent the last hour 'following' you around, and have to say that your experience looks so amazing. Jennifer just gave me this adress yesterday and I wanted to drop a note to say hi, and happy new year, wherever you will start it...
Shared some memories from Korea with you (where I have spent the last two months, what a coincidence...) and can't wait to hear about your adventures in Thailand!
I will be more than glad to catch with you somewhere on your visit to Spain, let me know about your plans.
Thanks for the fun blog!
Take care,
Marta
